European Citizens’ Initiative kicks off in November
published on 26 October 2006

On the 9th of November, the European Citizens’ Initiative (ECI) will go public. A broad alliance of NGOs from all over Europe will start a huge collection of signatures supporting the following demand:
“We, the undersigned, want the European Union to give legal force to the
European Citizens’ Initiative, where one million European citizens can
call on the European Commission to propose a change to European law.”

By signing this initiative , citizens will express their willingness to have a say on European issues and increase pressure on the EU-institutions to give a positive response.
The launch of the European Citizens’ Initiative will be celebrated by several events on the 9th of November.
- A press conference will be held in the European Parliament from 14:00 to 14:30h.
- At 14:45h citizens will meet in front of the European Parliament where the collection of signatures will officially start.
- In the evening, we will organise an ECI cafй, involving mainly young people talking about their role in the campaign

On the 11th of November Juan Carlos Madroгal (President of Mas Democracia and ECI-Coordinator for Spain) and Carsten Berg presented ECI-Campaign at the "CONGRES INTERNACIONAL -"Democracia participative directa" in Barcelona. The international audience of about 60 experts on local democracy, coming from NGOs, universities and the Catalonian Government was already well familiar with the concept of the citizens initiative on the municipality level and there are many new signatures, especially from people of the Catalonian region.

The Hungarian campaign kicked off on the 14th of November with a well-attended (about 100 persons and a dozen NGO) discussion evening in Budapest.

In the area of Bourgas in Bulgaria at the Black Sea, the ECI campaign was celebrated by two main activities: a public discussion with students from the Free University, and a conference with NGOs as well as politicians. On both occasions, many people got informed about the potential of citizens' rights of the initiative in general, and the benefits of ECI in particular. The organizaers, Iva Taraleshkova from Balkan Assist and Daniela Bozhinova from the Bulgarian Association for the Promotion of Citizens Initiative provided the audience with specific campaign material designed for Bulgarian.
