1. Historical check-up

With over 20 hectares of land, Treasury Holdings is proud to have created a vision for Spencer Dock that is the most ambitious example of urban regeneration ever undertaken in Ireland. This impressive project will set new standards for both distinctive offices and luxury waterside apartments, finished to the highest standard with a unique range of state-of-the-art fixtures and fittings. When complete there will be approx 700,000 sq m of accommodation. Spencer Dock will be extremely well served by a range of high quality public transport, facilitating easy access throughout the city and beyond. It is estimated that up to 25,000 people will work in the proximity of Spencer Dock, with a further 6,000 living there by its completion in 2014. A new railway station has opened which facilitates people living and working in the Docklands area. This forms part of the Government's €34.4billion transport investment plan, Transport 21. As part of this concept, Iarnród Éireann also plans to develop an Interconnector, envisaging an underground link from Spencer Dock onwards to Pearse Station and Heuston Station.

2. Project Goals

The Convention Centre Dublin is Ireland’s new world class convention facility and is scheduled to open in the second half of 2010. Providing an exceptional venue for some of the world’s leading international associations and prestigious corporate brands, the centre’s iconic status combines spacious and elegant conference halls and leading edge technology. The centre has an ethos for unparalleled customer service by demonstrating warmth and professionalism guests, will feel like the conference centre is an extension of home and with the traditional Irish welcome we have a winning combination.

3. Scope and basic activities

The Convention Centre, Dublin (CCD), announced it is the first carbon neutral international convention centre as the net impact of the building's construction on the environment is zero. This iconic landmark, which is still in construction, can be considered carbon neutral due to the use of low carbon cement throughout the building and through offsetting all unavoidable carbon emissions by investing in carbon credits in accordance with the Voluntary Carbon Standards (VCS). Validation and verification of the venue was conducted by UN accredited auditors SGS. Designed by Pritzker award-winning Irish architect Kevin Roche, the building is situated at Spencer Dock on the banks of the River Liffey. At a cost of €380 million, Ireland's newest purpose-built international conference and event venue is configured to accommodate conferences from 8 to 8,000 participants in 22 purpose-built meeting rooms. It includes a 2,000-seater auditorium, 4,500 square metres of exhibition space and banqueting facilities for up to 3,000 guests. The centre combines flexible and elegant conference halls and meeting spaces with an experienced management team and an extensive range of support services. Offering the latest technology, this sophisticated venue will include advanced audio-visual equipment and lighting systems as well as Wi-Fi enabled halls and meeting rooms. The venue will employ 250 full-time staff when operational.

4. Ideas for a change (activities)

Located at Spencer Dock, on the northern part of the Liffey (Dublin), the National Conference Center by the Irish-born Pritzker Prize winner architect, Kevin Roche, is a landmark structure for Dublin that attracting visitors (domestic as well as global) will help in reviving the tourism industry of the nation. Accommodating a 2,000-seat auditorium, two 450-seat multi-media halls, exhibition spaces, conference banqueting halls, meeting rooms and lecture areas, the conference and exhibition center will include the full range of facilities usually associated with state of the art conference centers internationally. Moreover, the convention center is planned to attach with a hotel as well that comes equipped with an indoor pool, exercise rooms, dining rooms, lounges and meeting rooms to greet delegates and visitors from different parts of the world. Finished with concrete and steel fibers, the complex makes use of sustainable energy sources and will help the guests in lowering their carbon footprints.
