Since the late 90's Newcastle and Gateshead cooperate in the strategy of using culture as the basis for the development of new regional economy. In 2002 the magazine "Newsweek" rated Newcastle and Gateshead, situated on both banks of the River Tyne in northeastern England, among the eight most creative cities in the world. This was a real reversal from the 80's, when both cities suffered from the collapse in heavy industry, mainly mining, heavy machine- and shipbuilding.
Today the goal is already achieved – the united urban area is a thriving cultural and entertainment center. More and more professionals are moving northeast from the prosperous London. Regeneration of this area is worth 375 million euros. It covers 22 hectares former contaminated industrial land now turned into a prosperous neighborhood for culture and business.
The quays of Gateshead - cultural sites change the perception of Gateshead. The conversion of Gateshead into a cultural center required high class vision, general planning, design and architectural skills. The new-Millennium Bridge in Gateshead is a pedestrian link between the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art in Gateshead and Newcastle port. It is one of the seven bridges over the river and the first commissioned by the Mayor of Gateshead. Since opening in 2001, this bridge became a symbol of cooperation between Newcastle and Gateshead. Beginning of regeneration and reconstruction of the quays of Gateshead started with the reconstruction of the silos of the huge old mill in the Baltic Arts Centre. This center includes a spacious studio for artists, five large galleries and panoramic restaurant on the roof. Not far from the Baltic Centre to the east is located the Sage Music Centre. The building houses three large concert halls. The original architecture hasis site into a remarkable local attraction. Over the next 10-20 years the quays of Gateshead and extensive areas between the river and city center will be developed as a series of urban mixed-use neighborhoods, including campus and a new integrated infrastructure.
