A branch of the Centre Pompidou was opened in
January 2003: Decision on the establishment of the center
March 2003: architectural competition held
November 2003: the project is assigned to Shigeru Ban and Jean de Gastines in collaboration with Philippe Gumuchdjian
September 2005: issue of building permit
2007-2009: Building of Centre Pompidou-Metz
The museum is located in the former industrial area and the Centre Pompidou-Metz is assigned the role of "catalyst" in the process of its reconstruction. At the same time the museum is near the city railway station, which is very convenient for future visitors. And such are expected mainly from neighboring countries - the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Belgium, Rhineland and of course Paris because from all these points with the express train you can reach Metz per hour - hour and a half. Urban authorities which have staked on the "Bilbao effect" predicted influx of 200-400 thousand tourists a year.
Construction budget is estimated at 69 million euros as part of the funds are allocated by the EU and the rest - from various French state structures. The first temporary exhibition under the heading "Masterpieces?" will examine the evolution of the term "masterpiece" in the last 500 years and it will feature 800 works.

The most crucial element in the museum building is its large roof with an area of 8000 sq.m, the form and structure Shigeru Ban has borrowed from the Chinese wicker hat with brim, and the used wood is fir and larch. Thus an exhibition has formed space in the first floor of the museum with a height of 10 meters, where very large works may be exposed. (For example, in the first museum exhibition will be shown the veil created after sketches of Pablo Picasso in 1917 for the ballet "Parade" of the ensemble of Sergei Dyagilev - sheet size 10 x 16.5 m). From this space through the elevator placed in the 77-meters high tower - the main "mast" of the building – could lead to three main galleries, each with an area of 1150 sq.m. (three 80-meter parallelepipeds crossing each other under 45 degrees). Each has a panoramic window, accurately oriented to places of interest in Metz. On top is a restaurant, gallery overview and auditorium for 144 seats. Around the museum is created a large park in which the main element is esplanada leading from the museum to the railway station.
